Storm damage roof inspection in Brixham

Storm damage evidence in Brixham, the most exposed part of Torbay, a headland taking wind from every quarter rather than one dominant direction.

A headland with no sheltered side

Brixham sits on the southern headland of Tor Bay, built in a steep bowl around the working harbour with the Berry Head limestone cliffs immediately east. Where Torquay and Paignton each get real shelter from one direction and exposure from another, Brixham's headland position means it takes wind from every quarter over the course of a storm, without the single obviously sheltered elevation a bay town further round the curve can rely on.

That omnidirectional exposure is the town's defining storm characteristic. A roof here cannot be assessed on the assumption that one side faces the weather and the other does not, because over the course of a single storm the wind direction changes as the front moves through.

Brixham's working fish market on the harbourside, along with the Golden Hind replica moored close by, sit at the most exposed, lowest point in the town, and a claim involving a harbourside commercial roof is handled with the same referenced approach as a fisherman's cottage on the hill above it.

Tight cottages, hard-worked fixings

The tightly packed fishermen's cottages on the harbour slopes, many rendered and painted, sit close enough together that wind funnels between them in ways that are hard to predict from a plan, let alone from ground level after the event. Ridge, hip and verge fixings across the town, on natural slate, clay pantile and concrete tile alike, are worked harder here than almost anywhere else in Torbay simply because they get tested from more directions across a typical winter.

Victorian terraces above the harbour and post-war housing on the upper ground see the same pattern, if anything worse on exposed corners where two wind directions can meet.

Recording a storm that hit from more than one side

Because the wind direction responsible for a given piece of damage is hard to establish after the fact in a town with no consistently sheltered side, a full-elevation flown record matters more here than almost anywhere else covered. A photograph of only the seaward face tells an incomplete story in Brixham in a way it might not in a town with a clearer, single exposure.

Berry Head's cliffs and the harbour together mean access on foot to some roof elevations is difficult even without storm damage, so a flight also solves a practical access problem, not just an evidence one.

Berry Head's cliffs, already mentioned for how they complicate ground access, sit within the same TQ5 postcode as the harbourside cottages that take the brunt of the headland's omnidirectional exposure, and Churston Cove a short way round the coast shares a similar pattern without quite the same intensity. Paignton and Torquay, both a short flight away, are covered in the same visit where a claim spans more than one Torbay address.

Behind the survey

What Brixham clients are actually buying

CAA registered

Operator ID and Flyer ID held, plus the A2 Certificate of Competency. Registration and insurance details go over with the pack as a matter of course, because most adjusters and agents need both on file before they can act on it.

100 megapixel camera

A DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a Hasselblad camera and 6K video. The resolution is what lets a single slate or a torn edge of felt be cropped into and still hold together, which matters when a photograph is the evidence.

Radiometric thermal

A DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced carrying a 640 by 512 thermal camera, used where water may already be tracking into the structure through storm damage and needs tracing rather than guessing at.

Insured with Coverdrone

Full commercial cover for the operation. A certificate is supplied with the pack without anyone having to chase for it, which is usually one of the first things a loss adjuster or managing agent asks for.
